Description
Decorative map of the island Hvan in the Danish Sound. In the center Tycho Brahe's famous observatory Uraniborg established in 1576, under the patronage of Frederick II, King of Denmark. Tycho Brahe had studied and travelled widely in Europe, buying instruments, visiting mathematicians and making astronomical observations. By the year 1592 the building of his observatory had been completed. Here talented young astronomers were given the opportunity to improve their knowledge of science under the direction of Tycho Brahe and with the help of up-to-date instruments. One of these students was Willem Blaeu.
In lower left hand corner a female holding a sphere and a large celestial globe.

Nicolas de Fer (1646 -1720)
de Fer was a French cartographer and geographer. He was also an engraver and publisher. His work prioritized quantity over quality; it often contained geographical errors and leaned more toward art than accuracy. De Fer was the youngest of three sons of Antoine de Fer, a cartographer. At 12, he apprenticed under Parisian engraver Louis Spirinx and made his first map of the Canal du Midi at 23. After his father's death in June 1673, his mother, Geneviève, initially took over the map-making company, which had begun to decline. She passed it and the atelier, called Quai de L'Horloge, on to Nicolas in 1687 because of her old age.
He is known for producing over 600 very maps.  The beauty of his maps was enough to get Nicolas de Fer a royal appointment as the geographer for the French Dauphin, the Duke of Anjou.

Paulus Swaen warrants the authenticity of our items and a certificate of authenticity is provided for each acquired lot.
Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
