Description
. . by Johannes Vredeman de Vries (ca.1527-1604), a famous Dutch architect and draughtsman, known in the Low Countries as 'The king of architects'.
The book was an important Dutch contribution to the theory of perspective.
Engraved by Henricus Hondius of The Hague.
Perspective was issued simultaneously in French, Latin, Dutch and German in 1604-1605, and is counted "among Vredeman's more celebrated works... What makes this book so visually compelling is Vredeman's geometric emphasis and restraint, which results in an almost eerie sequence of unpopulated rooms and courtyards displaying his flair for compositional forms. The classical language in which his architecture is clad thus becomes timeless in its character" (Millard, pp.20-21).
Paul Vredeman de Vries
Paul Vredeman de Vries was the son of Hans Vredeman de Vries and also worked as a painter and designer, and supplied the architectural title-frontispiece and six of the plates in the Architectura published with the Perspective.Hans (Johannes, Jan) Vredeman de Vries (born 1527, died about 1604–1605) was a famous Dutch architect, draughtsman and designer, known in the Low Countries as “the king of architects.” His publications on architecture and ornament were widely used by painters, engravers, goldsmiths and builders. At an advanced age he produced two theoretical manuals, Architectura (1577) and Perspective (1604–1605), the last of his works. In 1604 he asked the University of Leiden for a post in perspective, engineering and architecture, but the request was refused.
Hendrik Hondius I
Hendrik Hondius (born Hendrik de Hondt, 9 June 1573 – c. 1650) was a Flemish-born and trained engraver, cartographer and publisher, who settled in the Dutch Republic in 1597. He studied drawing under Jan Wierix of Antwerp, and by 1597 was settled in The Hague. He moved to Amsterdam in 1603 and to Leiden in 1604–1605, and then returned to The Hague. He was the first Dutch publisher to obtain a national privilege. He engraved Vredeman’s portrait (a bust of the 77-year-old artist, 1604), which he later enlarged for his Theatrum Honoris (1610). He also wrote his own works, such as Onderwijsinge in de Perspective Conste (The Hague, 1623).
The Perspective (1604–1605)
"Perspective, c’est à dire, le très renommé art du point oculaire…", was published in The Hague in 1604 by Hendrik Hondius, with the printer Beuckel Nieulandt, and in a second part in Leiden in 1605. It was issued simultaneously in Latin, French, German and Dutch. The book has two parts, each opening with an architectural title-frontispiece. It shows unpopulated rooms, courtyards, palaces, churches, gardens and streets set on geometric perspective lines, and was recommended to painters, engravers, goldsmiths, architects and craftsmen. A dealer quotes the verdict that the book’s geometric emphasis and restraint give its sequence of rooms and courtyards an “almost eerie” quality.

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
