Description
A very handsome map with a particularly fine cartouche showing the Turkish Sultan on his throne and allegorical figures at either side brandishing weapons. At right is a smaller cartouche with a dedication by the Blaeus. Shoals and reefs in the Red Sea are marked as patches of dots and crosses, though the Gulf of Aqaba is absent, leaving the Sinai indistinct from the rest of the Arabian coast.
The geography is reasonably accurate for the time, with many place names given. Armenia and George (Giorgia ) are named. An impressive and attractive map.
The map depicts the Ottoman Empire at its peak, spanning from Italy and Sicily to Egypt, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Caspian Sea, with Cyprus as its visual anchor. It includes period cartographic features, such as a horizontal Caspian Sea, and labels historical regions like Armenia and Mesopotamia.
The map is dedicated to the Brabantine orientalist and merchant David de Wilhem, whose coat of arms appears above the dedication.
The Latin motto below, ‘Concordia res parvae crescunt, Discordia maximae dilabuntur’ - ‘In Harmony small things grow, in Discord great things fall,’ is an appropriate one. The quote derives from Sallust’s Bellum Jugurthinum, a commentary on the victory over Jugurtha, King of Numidia, whose North African kingdom was brought down and annexed by the Romans. Aside from the message's geographical resonance for the Ottomans, the first part of the quote was often used by the fledgling Dutch Republics to justify their own actions. Above the title, a trio of figures completes the allegory. At center, enthroned, is an illustration of the Sultan, leader of a great empire often plagued by discord. To his right, a figure in classical dress, holding a burning brand and slaying an infant under his foot, is almost certainly Herod the Great. On his left, a bare-breasted female figure, crowned and carrying a bow and scimitar, is most likely Semiramis, Queen of the Assyrians. The Dutch letterpress text on the verso describes the Ottoman Empire and its parts.
