Five views of the coast of New Ireland in New Guinea. Abel Tasman, as well as Willem Schouten and Isaac le Maire, thought that this was the coast of New Guinea. In reality, it was the island now known as New Ireland.
This important composite plate of four panoramic coastal profile views along the northern approach to New Guinea, depicting the islands of Marken, the Groene ("Green") Islands, Sint Jans Island and New Ireland — all charted on the same latitude as Cabo de Santa Maria. Early Dutch navigators, including Abel Tasman, Willem Schouten and Isaac Le Maire, believed these island groups lay off the coast of New Guinea itself; in fact, they lie considerably to the east, near the island now known as New Ireland (part of the Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea). Ontong Java retains its historic name to this day; the Groene Eilanden are now the Green Islands, and Marken is today identified as Takuu Atoll.
The profile-view format — ship's-eye panoramas used for landfall recognition — reflects the plate's origin in VOC navigational practice, later repurposed as an illustration for Valentijn's monumental compendium.

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
We charge only one shipping fee when you have been successful on multiple items or when you want to combine gallery and auction purchases.
