Description
An early issue of this important book by Johann Wolfgang Heydt's describing the Dutch factories, settlements and stations at the hands of the Dutch East India Company in Africa and Asia. Illustrated with two engraved titles and 85 (of 115) engraved plates (including a few maps), by Seeligmann, Hoffer, Puscher and Berndt after Heydt.
Only the first part with 2 title pages, 10 pp introduction and pages 1 - 255, illustrated with 85 engraved plates and maps of Jakarta and Colombo.
The introduction has an extra page "Nach Standes Gebühr geehrter Leser!", by Johann Christian Wibel, dated 10Juni. 1744 and is bound after the usual page "Nach Standes Gebühr geehrter Leser!" by Philippus Angelus Sipman 6 Augustus 1744.
The book is the first illustrated book on ÂBatavia written by an Âeyewitness who lived there between 1737 and 1740. J.W. Heydt was a preciseÂdrawer and surveyor. He produced 41 engravings of different places in and around Batavia on order of Governor-General Valckenier. For himself Heydt always made another engraving, which he published together with precise descriptions after his return to Germany.
Batavia is presented in lavish and detailed engravings of grand buildings, churches, canals and warehouses, but very few inhabitants are portrayed.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
