Description
Pierre van der Aa used the old copper plate of Meurs and re-did the engraving, changed the large pictorial cartouche, a new scale of German and French leagues is provided. Longitude figures are added. Three new names in eastern Maryland and some other names have been added.
The van der Aa plate subsequently passed to Covens and Mortier, who added their imprint after deleting part of the van der Aa's imprint.
From Galerie Agréable du Monde, a sixty-six volume atlas complied in 1729 and said to have been issued in an edition of 100 copies only (Tooley, p. 1).
The work contained over 3000 plates and maps. Van der Aa states in the preface that nearly all the plates had been purchased from various Dutch publishers.
Pieter van der Aa was born in Leiden in 1659, became apprenticed to the booksellers trade at age 9 and died in 1733. Many of his atlases were made to order from outdated plates acquired from many of the older well-known cartographers.
A rare issue.
Pieter Vander Aa (1659 - 1733)
Van der AA began his career in Leiden in 1683 as a Latin trade publisher, publishing classical texts on medicine and science. His publications include: Naaukeurige versamling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land-reysen 1706, Atlas Nouveau 1710, and Galerie Agreable du Monde.
After 1700, van der Aa increasingly specialized in geography and travel books.
He published composite atlases, a series of geographical descriptions of European countries, and some spectacular works. Between 1706 and 1708, he published the Naauweurige versameling der gedenkwaardigste zee- en land-reysen, in 28 volumes.
Many of Van der Aa’s publications are richly illustrated with maps and plates. He took over many copperplates and prints from other publishers such as Carel Allard and Frederik De Wit.
The composite atlases from his workshop contain a curious mixture of his own material, copies of maps from other publishers, and reprints from old copper plates, now bearing his imprint.Â
The Galérie agréable du monde, was completed in 1729, and comprised 66 parts, bound in 27 volumes. Van der Aa presented it as a good investment; after publication, the work's antiquarian value would double, all the more so since it was printed in a limited edition of only 100 copies.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
