Description
The Bello Belgico , written by Famianus Strada (1572-1649), Jesuit and teacher at the Collegium Romanum in Rome, was a pro-Spanish and pro-Catholic book on the Dutch war of independence. The first part, Decas Prima , was issued in 1632: the second, Decas Secunda (1578-1590) in 1647.
Editions in Italian, Dutch, French, Spanish and even in the Polish language followed, but only the Latin and Dutch editions have the lion maps.
The Leo map (158x91mm.) is according to Van Der Heijden plate 10 in a second state.
Among the greatest decorative works of early cartography is a series of arresting maps showing The Netherlands and Belgium in the shape of a lion. The use of the shape of a lion in the depiction of the two countries arose in part from the fact that their actual shape is vaguely leonine. This commanding image was an apt symbol for a nation on the verge of unprecedented wealth and power. Secondly, the lion had long figured in the national iconography of the area, most of the coats-of-arms of the 17 provinces of the countries feature a lion.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
