Description
This provides an interesting illustrated description of China, Japan, the Philippines, and the Moluccas. It includes a map of China, Korea, and Japan, with the Sea between Korea and Japan called the "Zee van Japan" and the "Noord Zee van Japan."
The map of Japan was provided by Kaempfer and copied by Isaac Tirion.
Cordier indicates that the first edition of this work in Italian was in 1738, and the date 1734 on the title page throws the sequence of Tirion's maps into some confusion.
With a folding map of Japan and the Philippines.
The bird's-eye view of Dejima is also most interesting, being copied from a manuscript by Vogue, who was second-in-command on Dejima in 1713. The island is viewed from the land side, depicting the developments of the new warehouses and the garden as well as the famous speelhuis which contained a billiard table and musical instruments on the upper floor.
Due to the Dutch presence in Dejima, Nagasaki, Japan learned many aspects of the scientific and technological revolution occurring in Europe at that time, helping the country build up the beginnings of a theoretical and technological scientific base, which helps to explain Japan's success in its radical and speedy modernization following the opening of the country to foreign trade in 1854.
Rangaku, literally "Dutch Learning", and by extension "Western learning") is a body of knowledge developed by Japan through its contacts with the Dutch enclave of Dejima.

Isaac Tirion (1705 -1765)
Isaak Tirion was a Dutch publisher in Amsterdam. Born in Utrecht, Tirion quickly published pamphlets, historical works, and most importantly, maps and atlases. He came to Amsterdam ca. 1725, where we find his name for the first time in the records of the booksellers' guild, May 1727. His betrothal is dated 22 June 1730. He married Johanna Fries of Haarlem. After his wife's death, he remarried on 12 July 1737 to Johanna Koster of Alkmaar. In 1742, he bought the house on the Kalverstraat where Hendrik Wetstein, the well-known bookseller, had lived earlier. (This house belonged to Clement de Jonghe, the famous art seller, from 1680 to 1692.)
On the Kalverstraat, Isaac Tirion published several important books, many of which remain in demand for their interesting content and excellent illustrations.
De Tegenwoordige staat der Vereenigde Nederlanden, produced between 1739-1772; is a series that contains a significant number of maps and town plans. In 1760, he published Wagenaar's famous history of Amsterdam. Isaac Tirion then belonged to the board of the booksellers' guild.
A medal was struck with his effigy while he was in that capacity. (State medal room. See K. & S., p. 1531).
After a successful life, he died in 1765 and was buried in the Wester Church on 12 October. His wife continued the shop for ca. ten years. The house was sold to the bookseller Pieter de Hengst in 1793.
Most of the maps are based on De l'Isle, as some of them state. The Nieuwe en Beknopte Handatlas. Tirion must have published the first edition with 34 maps before 1740. He produced eight atlases in multiple editions in his long career, some of which were published posthumously until about 1784.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
