Description
On the front wall is written: "To the great men and women, our country is grateful". This lithograph shows people hanging in front of the Panthéon, and may be a way to illustrate how "grateful" the country is to the actual government, judiciary and army. The Panthéon is a temple in Paris where great people of the Nation are buried.
After the July Revolution and the reinstatement of freedom of the Press, Charles Philipon (1800-1862) recognized the public's growing desire for information. In 1830, he founded the political satirical illustrated paper LA CARICATURE, succeeding LA SILHOUETTE, which only had a short publication period of 14 months. PHILIPON’s brother-in-law, GABRIEL AUBERT, handled the publication's distribution and sales.
LA CARICATURE can be considered the first political and satirical French newspaper of that period, combining politics and contemporary art. The format of the 4-page paper was 36 x 27 cm and it was customary to insert two, sometimes three, lithographs in each edition. They were usually folded, sometimes hand-colored, and printed on white wove paper without text on the verso. On occasions, an oversize print was added. The text was written by PHILIPON, BALZAC and others. GRANDVILLE produced the masthead and the advertisement poster. In total, 251 editions of LA CARICATURE appeared from Nov.4, 1830 to Aug.27, 1835, featuring 524 caricatures by various artists, 91 of which were by Daumier. Each edition ran from 750 to 2,000 copies.
Notably, the annual subscription price of 52 Francs for the illustrated paper was relatively high. It corresponded to two-thirds of a Parisian worker's monthly income.
PHILIPON justified this price with the contributions of devoted journalists and gifted artists, which gave the paper a very high standard both artistically and politically. For readers who were interested but couldn't afford the hefty subscription price, a daily copy was posted in the window of Aubert’s shop at Galerie Véro-Dodat (in the artistic and cultural center of Paris, close to the Palais Royal).
This attracted the public, who eagerly absorbed the latest developments on censorship, legal trials, punishments, subjects that gave the artists the possibility to produce satirical illustrations.

Honoré Daumier (1808-1879)
Honoré Daumier was born in Marseille and died in Valmondois and his most active years were 1830 - 1879. Known as the "Michelango of Caricature", Honoré Daumier was a prolific painter, printmaker, sculptor, and caricaturist. He produced over 400 lithographs in his lifetime, known for their satires of political figures and bourgeois behavior in society. As a boy, he showed an inclination towards art, which his father tried to discourage, and so he put him to work as an usher. But, Daumier’s talents could not be dissuaded, and he later works at a bookseller, eventually landing in the employ of Alexandre Lenoir, an artist and archaeologist, and becoming his protégé.
It was here that he began making his first attempts at lithography and began a career producing plates for music producers and advertisement illustrations.
Through Daumier's drawings and Philipon's texts, the public learned of Macaire's wrongdoings without names ever being mentioned.
The plate was published in Caricaturana, which appeared between August 1836 and November 1838, and various books were published in 1839 by Aubert, using mirror images, reduced and redrawn versions of the originals after Daumier and copied by Menut-Alophe.
