Description
An inset plan of Batavia and clearly indicated rice fields, mountains, forests, towns in profile and even elephants suggest the wealth of detail found on this map. Modeled on Hadrien Reland's important Dutch map of a few years earlier, the superb topographical detail is complemented by a drapery-style cartouche and side panels which provide a full French text description of the island, its topography, history, flora, fauna and inhabitants.
One of the finest large-scale maps of Java, giving good information regarding the V.O.C. settlements, each indicated with a flag in national 3-color.
From Chatelain's "Atlas Historique et Méthodique".
Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743)
Henri Abraham Chatelain was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins. He proved a successful businessman, building lucrative networks in London, The Hague and then Amsterdam. He worked in partnership with his father, Zacharie Chatelain (d. 1723), and his younger brother, Zacharie Junior (1690–1754). The publishing firm appears in Amsterdam from about 1700 to 1770 as Chatelain, Chatelain Frères and Chatelain & Fils, and the imprint on each volume depends on which family partnership was active at the time. Zacharie is recorded living “op den Dam” in 1730.He is wellknown for his "Atlas Historique, ou Nouvelle Introduction à l’Histoire". It appeared in seven volumes between 1705 and 1720. Subjects include history and genealogy, geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry and ethnography, so it is closer to a historical encyclopedia than a conventional atlas. The intended audience was the general public of the early 18th century, who were fascinated by the recently conquered colonies and the new discoveries.
Thext in the atlas was compiled by the French geographer Nicolas Gueudeville and Garillon, with a supplement by H.P. de Limiers. The maps in the books are based on those by Guillaume Delisle.
The works were published over the years in several editions.
A second edition appeared in 1732, and Zacharie Chatelain reissued the work from 1732 to 1739.
His his brother was Zacharie Chatelain (1690-1754)

Paulus Swaen warrants the authenticity of our items and a certificate of authenticity is provided for each acquired lot.
Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
