Description
Born in Alkmaar, Holland, William Janszoon Blaeu settled in Amsterdam, where he became a well-respected globe maker and publisher. He founded the Blaeu firm in 1596, and he earned an appointment as mapmaker to the Dutch East India Company in 1634; thereafter, he had access to information unavailable to his contemporaries. Also to his advantage, Blaeu studied under Tycho Brahe-mathematician, scientist and the most noted astronomer of the time. Blaeu was said to be Brahe's most famous pupil.
The Blaeu firm, which was carried on by his two sons after his death, was the most productive cartographic establishment in the Netherlands until it was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1672. The historical importance of Blaeu maps make them an essential part of a fine antique map collection. Blaeu maps are recognized immediately by the beauty of their ornamentation. Whereas 16th-century publishers decorated their maps with strap-work designs in black and white, the Blaeu maps were embellished with decorative swags, symbols, coat of arms, city views, and large pictorial cartouches, and they were often hand-colored to meet Baroque tastes.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
We charge only one shipping fee when you have been successful on multiple items or when you want to combine gallery and auction purchases.
