Description
Rare chart of the Indian Ocean, with nice detail on Ceylon (Sri Lanka) with compass roses and a system of rhumb lines, soundings and anchorage's.
Many place names.
The plate was newly made by Doncker, in an early stage he used the copperplates of Goos. More frequently than Goos, Lootsman, Van Loon, and other contemporaries, Hendrik Doncker corrected and improved charts. As a result, this map is much more updated than the Janssonius (1658) map of the Bay of Bengal
Reference: Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Vol. IV, Don. [map 46], Gole Early maps of India, 19.
Hendrik Doncker (1626-1699)
Hendrik Doncker was a famous Amsterdam bookseller who started at 22 and ran his shop successfully for 50 years. Not much is known about his family background and education. He became an independent professional by joining the Amsterdam booksellers’ guild in 1647. He published his first sea atlas around 1659. He based his sea atlases on his own work, while many maps of the time copied other publishers' work. Doncker's maps were known for their accuracy; he even supplemented his charts with the latest discoveries.During the production of the sea atlas De Zeespiegel, he cooperated for several years with Pieter Goos and Anthonie Jacobsz. After his death, Johannes Keulen eventually bought his stock of copper plates.
His major cartographic contributions include his debut maritime atlas, the Zee-Atlas ofte Water-waereldt (1659), alongside pilot guides such as the Lichtende Columne ofte Zeespiegel (1655) and the Nieuwe Groote Vermeerderde Zeeatlas.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
