Description
Two-sheet geographical map of Portugal, by Rizzi Zannoni and published in Paris by Lattrè.
The upper part covers from the north of Lisbon to Galicia and east to Valladolid, Spain. Engraved in a highly detailed topographic style. The title appears above the top edge of the map.
The lower map describes the territory extending from Lisbon to Gibraltar and from the Atlantic Ocean to Andalusia, Spain. A large decorative cartouche with the title appears in the lower-left corner.
These are two of the most detailed maps of northern and southern Portugal to appear in the late 18th century.
The 2 sheets can be united to form a large map of approx. 620 X 423 mm.
Giovanni Rizzi-Zannoni studied at the University of Padua (1749-1751) then traveled to Turkey and Russia. In 1753, he began his career as a geographer in Poland in the service of King Augustus III. In 1756, he moved to Sweden and Denmark where he was in charge of geodetic measurements in the counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst (today in Germany. The following year, he went into the service of Prussia and participated in the Seven Years' War. He was then taken prisoner at the Battle of Rossbach on 7 December 1757 and sent to Paris. He remained there for more than twenty years. He then drew up a map of the kingdom of Naples and was appointed the First hydrographer of the Depot des Cartes and plans of the Navy (1772-1775).
Back in Padua in 1776, he embarked on geodesic and astronomical cartography of Italy which would remain unfinished, apart from his most famous work, the Geographical Atlas of the Kingdom of Naples, which he would complete in 1812.

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
