Description
Manuscript world map showing the American and African continent and the southern parts of Asia. In the Indian Ocean a large depiction of Amerigo Vespucci 1454 – 1512) on his ship. Vespucci stands on deck and the central mast has been broken, the Vespucci coat-of-arms is attached to the front mast. Minerva (Science) at right, with the gorgon shield and guiding the boat a warrior riding on a tortoise pulled by four lions. Two sea creatures carrying the limbs of drowned men at left. The scene is copied from a design by Jan van der Straet, a Flemish painter and draughtsman (1523 - 1605).
In bottom part scenes of Halifax, Quebec, Leon, Omar Mulus, Grodno, Pagus Oceanidis and Vicus Virginiaes.
The other borders showing locals, animals, plants and surveying instruments.
The seas are continents are filled with ships, animals cannibals.
A decorative piece probably drawn around 1954 in the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the birth date of Amerigo Vespucci.
Vespucci was an Italian explorer, financier, navigator and cartographer who first demonstrated in about 1502 that Brazil and the West Indies did not represent Asia's eastern outskirts as initially conjectured from Columbus' voyages, but instead constituted an entirely separate landmass hitherto unknown to people of the Old World.
Colloquially referred to as the New World, this second super continent came to be termed "Americas", deriving its name from Americus, the Latin version of Vespucci's first name.
