Description
On the left of the map, a table lists the 83 French departments and a comparative nomenclature of unauthorized religious communities with the number of establishments and members in 1861 and 1877. Inset map of Corsica at the bottom right (department 20). At the top right, a colour-coded key indicates: - Communities whose General Superiors are in Rome. - Communities whose mother houses are in France - Communities authorized only in Savoy.
Following this census, congregations will have to provide the necessary justifications to be authorized or not by public authorities. The Society of Jesus is mainly targeted.
We were only able to locate one copy kept at the Bibliothèque National de France.
"The Falloux law of 15 March 1850, which proclaims the freedom of education, lightens the obligations of the future head of a public school... From the Falloux law to the end of the Third Republic, the period was marked by relative stability; boarding school masters were free and were not obliged to communicate either the number of their pupils or their staff records. A few major institutions were then established, some of which still exist, particularly those of religious congregations, which had been banned until then. These ecclesiastical institutions increased in number until the decree of 29 March 1880, which once again put a stop to their development. In his report to the President of the Republic, the Minister of the Interior and Religious Affairs indicates that "a census carried out in 1877 recorded the existence of 500 unauthorized congregations".
These different orders must therefore provide the necessary justifications to be authorized or not by the public authorities. But the congregation that was essentially targeted was the Society of Jesus. In 1876, private schools run by secular priests, as well as secular schools, were in decline, whereas houses belonging to congregations had been growing rapidly since 1854. Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
