Description
A fine map of the Black Sea region, tracing its cartographic lineage back to Guillaume de l'Isle, Premier Géographe du Roi, to Louis XIV, whose geographical determinations underpin this "nouvelle carte." The plate passed through the hands of Reinier and Josua Ottens of Amsterdam before being acquired, along with much of the Ottens stock, by the publisher Jan Barend Elwe, who issued it in his 1792 atlas — one of several editions Elwe produced largely by re-using and updating existing eighteenth-century Dutch copperplates rather than commissioning new surveys.
The map covers Moldavia, Bulgaria, Anatolia ("Natolie"), Little Tartary, Ukraine and the Crimea, laying out the contested frontier between the Russian and Ottoman empires "tant en Europe qu'en Asie" — both in Europe and in Asia. The subject was of considerable topical interest: the Crimean Khanate, long an Ottoman vassal state, had only recently been annexed outright by Catherine the Great's Russia in 1783, redrawing the very border the map sets out to depict. The title appears within a decorative headpiece cartouche.
Guillaume de l'Isle was the most influential French cartographer of his generation, renowned for grounding his maps in astronomical observation rather than inherited convention; his geographical framework long remained the standard reference for the region even as later publishers, like Elwe, continued to reissue and adapt it decades after his death.
