Description

Fantastic pictorial map of Moscow designed to draw tourists to the new Soviet Union.

The cultural vitality of Moscow in the early years of the Soviet Union is the focal point of this tourist map, issued around 1938 by Michael Getmanski.
Appropriately, sites of the Soviet state are numbered in red, but these comprise only a small portion of the numbered locations within the map. The majority is made up of theaters (38), museums (18) and monuments (11), in addition to train stations and hotels. The Head Office of Intourist, the publishing organization, is also noted.

Intourist was created in 1929 to promote the USSR’s image overseas. Prior to the outset of the Cold War, Stalin’s Russia was by no means a closed country.
Many Western visitors arrived by way of special delegations, trade groups, or other “specialized” means. But the issue of this map represents a concentrated effort to appeal and embrace a broader market of tourism within the Soviet Union.

Getmasnki was a graphic artist and illustrator who designed book covers and illustrations for magazines and children’s books as well as a travel guide to the Soviet Union issued by Intourist in 1936.
This map was also issued in a French language version.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
