Description
Translation in English of title text: You are really getting dressed up, my dear! - I am going to a banquet presided by Pierre Leroux. And you know how he enjoys beautiful dresses!
Published by Bauger, rue du Croissant 16 (lower left). Printed by Imprimeurs d'Aubert & Cie at Aubert, Place de la Bourse. LES FEMMES SOCIALISTES (The socialist women). This series contains 14 prints of which 10 were published in the CHARIVARI between April and June 1849. 4 remained unpublished (DR 1928 – 1931). They may have been part of this series. Also there existed an album “Les Femmes Socialistes” containing all ten prints, which had been published in the Charivari.
The title of the series is based on a Vaudeville play in one act, called "Varin et De Beauvoir, Les femmes socialistes" (Varin and De Beauvoir, the socialist women), which was performed in April 1849 at the Montansier Theater in Paris.
The anti-feminist writers and draftsmen of the Charivari were true followers of the trend (from the masculine point of view). In nearly 60 plates of the series LES BAS BLEUS, LES DIVORCEUSES and LES FEMMES SOCIALISTES, Daumier ridiculed the feminist movement, concentrating however mainly on the new system’s high priestesses and their silly followers.
Text written by Alphonse Jean LAURENT-JAN (1808-1877) who was a journalist, writer and associate at the Charivari, where he wrote captions for Daumier’s lithographs. He was also a friend of Balzac.
Known chiefly as a political and social satirist, Honoré DAUMIER used the printmaking process of lithography, still relatively new at the time, to contribute cartoons and caricatures to French news weeklies.
