Edition illustrated with 18 maps in original outline colors dated 1656. No date and title page and maps not numbered (according to Pastoureau 1 C, maps are numbered).
Nicolas I Sanson published alone the quarto atlases of the four continents. These atlases were widely distributed thanks to foreign editions and gathered the four works under the general title of "Description de tout l'univers".
Contents : Afrique - Royaume de Maroc - Royaume de Fez - Partie de Barbarie ou est le royaume d’Alger – Partie de Barbarie… de Tunis – Royaume et désert de Barca, et l’Aegypte – Partie du Biledugerid – Egypte divisée – Afrique ou Libie ultérieure – La Guinée – Partie de la Haute Aethiopie – Le Zanguebar – Partie du Zanguebar – Royaume de Congo – Pays, et coste des Caffres – Isle de Madagascar – Isles du Cap Vert – Isles Canaries – Les isles de Malte, Goze. The first atlases published by Sanson, a pioneer in atlas production and in making cartography a science, were quarto atlases of the continents. Most of the maps are engraved especially for these works and are not reductions of larger previously published maps.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
We charge only one shipping fee when you have been successful on multiple items or when you want to combine gallery and auction purchases.
