Description
Uncommon map prepared in 1718 by Johannes Hilarides, principal at the Latin School in Bolsward. Probably the only printed plan of a Frisian village of that time. The map was meant to be sold separately at the "Uitbeeldinge der Heerlijkheit Friesland" (de Schotanus-Halma Atlas).
At the top left of the title is the legend. On the right, a bay with the passage to the sea; below that, a map of Southwest Friesland. At the bottom, a cartouche with the Molkwerum coat of arms and a view of the village.
Molkwerum, located between Hindeloopen and Stavoren, was once a thriving village whose inhabitants worked in maritime trade, but is now small and submerged. Only 7 houses from the heyday, some elevations in the landscape and a number of ditches remind us of a glorious past.
A charming topographical view of Molkwerum, the small Frisian fishing village nicknamed "het Friessche Doolhof" (the Frisian Labyrinth) for its bewildering maze of narrow waterways and some twenty-seven small bridges connecting its scattered islets—a layout so singular that it was described as one of the Netherlands' curiosities.
The village, first recorded in 1398 as Molkenhuysen, had by the late seventeenth century built a considerable reputation as a Baltic trading port, and was equally famed for the strikingly distinctive traditional costume worn by its inhabitants, considered so unusual and archaic by outsiders that Molkwerum's dress and customs were regularly singled out in contemporary accounts of the province — hence the description of the village as "berucht" (renowned/notorious).

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
