Description
The original Kubn edition did not include the large inset views of Jauer and Hirschberk in the upper corners.
IAURANUS is the second Khunovius map published with Schenk’s address. First one, SCHWIDNICENSIS, was indirect copy of Khunovius original, closely following an earlier copy by Joannes Blaeu (S17-045) with all its errors and adding Schenk’s own ones. IAURANUS is quite different.
Similarity to Khunovius original is easily noticeable, suggesting that Schenk used the original Khunovius map as a model for his copy. Onto his map Schenk transferred the hunting scene, filling the lower right corner, geographical coordinates with untypical prime meridian used by Khunovius and specific only to his maps, settlements network, and detail hydrography. He even tried to imitate the way Khunovius presented mountain areas – but with less success.
To make his map more visually attractive Schenk also added views of two main towns of the Duchy of Jawor: Hirschberg (=Jelenia Góra) and Iauer (=Jawor), the latter “ohne die Vorstätte” (“without suburbs”).
The map is recorded in two states:
1st state: with an incomplete list of 11 objects on the view of Iauer (nos.1 and 6 to 9 lacking description, no.3 described as “Kloster”)
2nd state: with all objects described, no.3 as “Kloster St. Frantzisky”
Pieter Schenk was a Dutch publisher and mapmaker, born in Germany in 1660, but moved to Amsterdam in 1683, where he was a pupil of Gerard Valck. Schenk married Valck's sister, Agatha in 1687. The marriage produced 4 children, who all had an interest, either through marriage or on their father's account, in the map making and publishing business in Amsterdam.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
