Description
An early Regency 21-inch terrestrial globe CARY, John and William. - Cary's New Terrestrial Globe Exhibiting The Tracks and Discoveries made by Captain Cook; Also those of Captain Vancouver on the Northwest Coast of America and M. De La Perouse, On the Coast of Tartary, Together With every other Improvement collected from Various Navigators and Travellers to the present time. London: Made & Sold by J. & W. Cary, Strand, March 1st, 1816. With Corrections and Additions to 1818.
The globe is positioned on its original three-legged wooden stand, with three quadrant supports carrying a brass center post, and cross stretchers incorporating a compass.
The globe exhibits some typical discoloration or fading, consistent with its 200-year-old age. The globe has recently undergone professional restoration; small missing areas have been filled in, and it now features a new layer of varnish.
The compass card is in facsimile. Brass hour circles and meridian circles, graduated on one face, with a groove on the verso. Hand-coloured engraved horizon bar. The globe makes great presentation. The terrestrial globe marking the tracks of Cook's third voyage, La Perouse and Vancouver in the Pacific, the voyages of Phipps (1773) to Spitsbergen, Pickersgill (1776), etc. in search of the North-West Passage.
Reference: A similar globe is mentioned in Van der Krogt Car 11 (held in the Utrecht University Museum). This globe, according to Peter van der Krogt, is in poor condition.
English cartographer John Cary served his apprenticeship as an engraver in London before setting up his own business in the Strand in 1783. He soon gained a reputation for his maps and globes, and his atlas, The New and Correct English Atlas published in 1787, became a standard reference work in England.
In the production of globes, he worked with his brother, William Cary, who was highly regarded for his skills as an astronomical instrument maker. Cary issued globes in 3.5", 9", 12" and 21" sizes starting in 1792 and added this 18" in 1816/17.
The globe is beautifully drawn with precision in a style similar to Cary's maps, lacking any ornamentation.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
