Description
This uncommon map of Japan, a reduced version of his larger map, contains comments about the nature of the country. For instance, Ocsaqui (Okazaki, near Nagoya) is said to have the most beautiful woman. Lake Biwi is said to be where one can catch quantite de saumons.
An island, which could be Tsushima, off the coast of Kyushu, is described as the island where worthless youths are sent and made to work until their relations remove them. Tavernier marked three places where there were alleged to be silver mines.
The map is very inaccurate. Matsushima is, for instance, shown as a long north-south island off a part of Honshu called Ochior (Oshu). Kyushu and Skikoku are shown as much smaller than in other seventeenth-century maps and than they really are.

The map is of importance for the dual naming of "Mer de Coreer" and "Ocean Orientale" for the sea in between Korea and Japan.

We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
