Description
This uncommon map of Japan, on a reasonably large scale, includes comments on the country's nature. For instance, Ocsaqui (Okazaki, near Nagoya) is said to have the most beautiful women.
Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605-1689) used both names for the same sea-space: "Océan Oriental," written in large characters, located in the middle of the sea, and "mer de Coreer," in small letters, along the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula. Tavernier based his cartography of the Japanese archipelago on the Blancus-Moreira model.
Lake Biwi is said to be where one can catch quantite de saumons .
An island, which could be Tsushima off the coast of Kyushu, is described as the place where worthless youths are sent to work until their relations remove them. Tavenier marked three locations where silver mines were alleged to be.
Unfortunately, the map is very inaccurate. Matsushima is, for instance, shown as a long, north-south island off the coast of Ochior (Oshu), a part of Honshu. Kyushu and Skikoku are shown as much smaller than in other seventeenth-century maps and than they really are.
The map is of interest for the dual-naming of "Mer de Coreer" and "Océan Oriental" for the sea between Korea and Japan.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
