Description
Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605-1689) used both names for he same sea-space : "Océan Oriental " written in great characters, located in the middle of the sea, and "mer de Coreer" in minus, along eastern sea coast of Korean peninsula. Tavernier based his cartography of the shape of Japanese archipelago on the Blancus-Moreira-Dudley model.
Lake Biwi is said to be where one can catch quantite de saumons .
An island, which could be Tsushima, off the coast of Kyushu is described as the island where worthless youths are sent and made to work until their relations remove them. Tavenier marked three places where there were alleged to be silver mines.
Unfortunately the map is very inaccurate. Matsushima is, for instance, shown as a long north-south island off a part of Honshu called Ochior (Oshu). Kyushu and Skikoku are shown as much smaller than in other seventeenth-century maps and than they really are.
The map is of interest for the dual-naming of "Mer de Coreer" and "Océan Oriental" for the sea between Korea and Japan.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
