Description
The German edition of this map of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands in full original colors. Published in Seligmann's "Sammlung verschiedener auslaendischer und seltener Vögel", published in nine parts between 1749 and 1776. The English edition of this map was published in Catesby's Natural History of South Carolina and the Bahama Islands (London, 1743).
The map is based on a 1733 map by Henry Popple called “A Map of the British Empire in America with the French and Spanish settlements adjacent thereto. Showing the colonial southeast in good detail, with coloring representing British claims in pink, French possessions in green and Spanish regions in yellow.
It is not generally recognized that the English version of this map appeared in two states. On the first state of 1743, the territory on both sides of the Mississippi was colored green, to indicate that the entire region was in the hands of the French.
A second state was included in the third edition of the Natural History in 1771, altered to show the political realignment brought about by the Treaty of Paris in 1763. The territory on the east bank of the Mississippi, which had been acquired by Britain, was now colored green; the territory to the West, which now belonged to Spain, was colored blue.
The present German edition corresponds with the English first state.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
