Description
Two fine detailed regional maps by Ortelius. The first map shows the Belgian and French Coastal region, from Estaples to Gruerlinge.
The second map shows the region Centered on Perone and S. Quintin, along the Sere and Oyse Rivers.
Each map features a decorative title cartouche in the lower left quadrant. Both maps show their respective regions in wonderful detail with attention to forest, cities, roads, rivers and villages.
Published first in Antwerp by Ortelius in 1579 for issue in his seminal atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. This copy was published by Le Clerc in 1616.
Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was one of the most important figures in the history of cartography, and is most famously credited with the compilation of the seminal 1570 atlas 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum', generally considered to be the world's first modern atlas.
Ortelius traveled extensively through Europe where he came into contact with Mercator, under whose influence, he marketed himself as a "scientific geographer".

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
We charge only one shipping fee when you have been successful on multiple items or when you want to combine gallery and auction purchases.
