1879 HOPKINS, H.W. - This scarce city atlas of Quebec is illustrated with 18 hand-colored maps made by Henry Whitmer
Description
This scarce city atlas of Quebec is illustrated with 18 hand-colored maps made by Henry Whitmer, 1838-1920. The atlas contains 12 maps of Parishes, 5 maps of Quebec by section and 12 other vilages and town in the region.
Whitmer also made a few similar atlases, which are more common; "Atlas of the city and island of Montreal, including the counties of Jacques Cartier and Hochelaga from actual surveys, based upon the cadastral plans deposited in the office of the Department of Crown Lands".
Combined Atlas of the State of New Jersey and the City of Newark
Atlas of The City of Providence, R.I. and Environs.
Atlas of the City of Newton, Middlesex Co. Massachusetts, from actual Survey Official records & Private Plans.
Atlas of the City of New Haven Connecticut.
“It was in December 1791 that the Constitutional Act was promulgated. Quebec then became the capital of Lower Canada. In June and July 1792, the first elections took place. Previously, on May 7, 1792, 225 years ago today, Lieutenant Governor Alured Clarke fixed the boundaries of 21 electoral districts. In Quebec, he created the constituencies of Lower Town and Upper Town. In doing so, it determines the boundaries of the city itself. To the south, east and north, we find natural boundaries, namely the Saint-Laurent River and the Saint-Charles River.
To the west, we draw a straight line from the General Hospital, along the river, to the river on the other side of the plateau. This line follows the axis of rue Saint-Ours, today Boulevard Langelier.
In the upper town, this line passes diagonally between the current avenues De Salaberry and Cartier. Since that time, Quebec City has expanded westward. However, even today, we still find remnants of this old limit. Thus, Boulevard Langelier and Avenue De Salaberry divide the city between the east, the old city, and the west, its more recent extension. » – Quebec Historical Society

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
