Lucien Boucher (1889-1971)
Lucien Boucher was born in Chartres and was educated at the École de Céramique de Sèvres and at first focused on ceramics. Before the First World War he had already begun to make a name for himself in the French art scene through cartoons published in the weekly magazine Le Rire. After the war, which led to a more serious engagement with his subjects, he moved into commercial illustration and poster design. From the 1920s he produced a series of posters inspired by surrealism.Air France
Boucher’s best-known for a series of planispheric and celestial maps he designed for Air France. He was contracted by the airline from 1935 (his first poster dates from 1934), and designed a number of travel posters for the company, working well into his seventies. He revised and updated them through the early Jet Age.
Boucher chose to portray Air France’s extensive global network, which is said to have revolutionized airline advertisements. He used elements of surrealism, which turned what could have been straightforward route maps into more complex visual narratives. His work is characterized by careful detail and strong composition. 1934: Air France Réseau Aérien Mondial, his first Air France poster, a chromolithographed pictorial route map. The routes to Berlin and Warsaw, and the depiction of Danzig, indicate a date before the political realignments of 1939.
- c. 1939: Nova et Vetera: Sur la vieille terre des chemins nouveaux, an early map with routes to Buenos Aires and Santiago, New York, Cairo, Beirut, Calcutta, Saigon and Hong Kong. Hundreds of vintage copies exist on the market.
- 1938/39: De jour et de nuit, de nuit et de jour, dans tous les ciels, in which routes cross a thin world outline superimposed on a celestial map of the Zodiac. It was meant to show that Air France could fly day and night.
- Post-war (1948–1959): a world pictorial map of 1948 (routes to Buenos Aires, the eastern United States, Tehran, Calcutta, Shanghai, Manila, Saigon, Hong Kong, Hanoi, Madagascar, Mauritius and East Africa), a “Signes du Zodiaque” poster (1951 and 1956 versions are listed), and a 1959 “Blue Pink” map, one of a series of eight posters commissioned by Air France.

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
