Description
There are beautiful depictions of Stonehenge in the top right corner (wrongly attributed by Speed to have been erected by Aurelius Ambrosius), while in the opposite corner is one of the earliest town plans of the cathedral city of Salisbury, complete with a lettered (a-s) key to all the cities important buildings, major thoroughfares, churches, lanes and markets. The plan of Salisbury is remarkable for its accuracy and clarity, showing the new city laid out by the bishops of the 13th century.
Running down the left side of the map are the heraldic arms of the Earls of Wiltshire & Salisbury. Beneath the view of Stonehenge is a commentary by Speed about the leader ot the British resistance to the Anglo Saxons, namely Aurelius Ambrosius, as Speed believed this to be his burial place in 506 AD.
The main body of the map provides a wealth of information, with the location of places, forests, hills, rivers, parks and the like. Curiously, Speed does not mention the equally magnificent prehistoric complex of Avesbury.
John Speed was an English cartographer and historian. He is, alongside Christopher Saxton, one of the best known English mapmakers of the early modern period.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
