Description
Nice small map of Westphalia in Germany by Johannes Walch in his rare Allgemeiner Atlas Nach den bewährsten Hülfsmitteln und astronomischen Ortsbestimungen…, edition of 1812.
Johann Walch (1757-1824) was cartographer and map publisher active in Augsburg, he was the son-in-law of Johann Martin Will whom he succeeded in 1806.
R. Tooley lists edition of this Allgemeiner Atlas of 1803, 1808 and 1816, but not this edition of 1812.
Johannes Walch (1757-1815)
Johannes Walch was the son of Sebastian Walch (1721–1788), a merchant, amateur painter and engraver. He trained as a miniature painter in Augsburg, Geneva and at the Vienna Art Academy, and he took a two-year trip to Italy. He settled in Augsburg before 1785, and on 16 January 1786 he married Anna Regina Will (1759–1837), eldest daughter of the engraver and publisher Johann Martin Will. He then worked in his father-in-law’s publishing house. In 1789, the Augsburg publisher Johann Martin Will and Walch acquired the legacy of Gustav Conrad Lotter (1746–1776), son of Tobias Conrad Lotter. This was a major purchase: the material of the map publishers Matthäus Seutter and Tobias Conrad Lotter, comprising almost 25,000 individual map sheets and 208 copper plates.
After Will’s death in 1806, Walch inherited the Will publishing house and expanded it into an important map publisher, the “Joh. Walch’sche Landkartenhandlung.”
He published several atlases and sheet maps, and many were reprinted after his death. Michael Ritter, writing in Cartographica Helvetica, credits Will and especially Walch with preventing the complete disappearance of map production in Augsburg at the end of the 18th century, as the city’s printing and publishing business declined economically.
His son, Johann Sebastian (Lorenz) Walch (1787–1840), continued the publishing house. A firm of the Walch name survived into modern times, but the publishing house burned down in the Second World War and most of the written and printed documents were destroyed, so a detailed firm history is hard to write.

Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
