Description
Large wall map of the most famous plan of Ancient Rome. The plate in 8 sheets is engraved by and first published by Stephanus Du Perac in 1574: re-published by Villamena and then by de G.J.Rossi published between 1649 and 1691.

Stephanus Du Perac (c.1525-1601) was an engraver, designer, garden designer, architect, painter, and publisher who arrived in Rome in 1559.
For this edition, G.J.Rossi added underneath the eight-sheet map a suite of 12 engravings representing the triumphs of the Roman Emperors, described by the antique dealer and historian from Verona Onufrio Panvinio (1529-1568). This series was first published in 1618.
The first panel has the new publisher's address and 11 engravings of historical scenes.Amplissimi ornatissinniq triumphi.. The engravings are numbered from 1-11. Underneath, he added a numbered key (1-159) to identify the monuments in town.
In the bottom is a label of the publisher Io.

Romae KAL. APRIL M.D.LXXIIII Excudebat Romae Franciscus Villamoena.

A unique opportunity to buy a Lafreri-school wall map.

Authenticity Guarantee
Certificate of authenticityWe provide professional descriptions, condition report (based on 45 years experience in the map business)
Paulus Swaen warrants the authenticity of our items and a certificate of authenticity is provided for each acquired lot.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
