Description
Book (tome. VI) illustrated with 3 folding maps and 9 copper-plate Biblical engravings by the German master Joseph à Montalegre, including the rare map of the double-hemisphere world.
The world map Benedict Arias Montanus Sacrae Geographiae Tabulam…( "Tom VI pag.553".) at size of 313x515mm. is of geographic significance for its apparent depiction of the north coast of Australia four decades before its "discovery," a feature which has caused considerable controversy among historians.
The map features some very interesting cartography based on Gastaldi - with North America and Asia linked by a prominent land bridge. The double hemispheres are surrounded by strapwork cartouches containing text in both Hebrew and Latin, and is adorned with wind heads, sailing ships, and sea monsters.

The map "Terrae Israel Omnis ante Canaan …" is oriented to the east and depicts the Land of Israel, previously called Canaan, divided into 11 tribes. The map is slightly browned. (330x485mm)

The map "Tabula Terrae Canaan …" (323x500mm.) is a map of Canaan at the time of Abraham and before the conquest by the Children of Israel, with neighboring regions. In very good condition.

A volume from the series of anthologies of Biblical commentary published by Balthasar Christoph Wust (1656-1707) featuring Jewish scholarly articles in Latin (with a smattering of Greek and Hebrew) by a variety of theologians and historians. In this volume are diverse articles including a treatise on the shape and construction of Noah's Ark by the French mathematician Jean Borrell and Matthaeus Hostus. The central work is an in-depth analysis (lavishly illustrated) on the Tabernacle and Temples by the renowned Spanish scholar Benedict Arias Montanus (1527-98.).

Reference: Shirley, World, 125 (this version mentioned in Corrigenda and Addenda) ; E. & G. Wajntraub, Hebrew Maps of the Holy Land, No. 12.
