Description
A large and pictorially striking 'Wonderland' advertising poster on behalf of the London Underground, published in the late 1920s. The poster was very popular, and ran for three editions.
This version is the third state of three editions identified by a greyhound in the upper left triangle above a sign reading "On to Wembley".
In the first edition (1914) this triangle features houses, and in the second edition (1924) is replaced by a Lion.
In 1913 the commercial director of the London Underground ( Frank Pick ) commissioned a series of distinctive posters to make the London Underground more attractive to travel on.
The Wonderground map proved so popular it was sold to the public
It came about because by the outbreak of 'The Great War' in 1914, the London Underground network was in some trouble - as it was predominately used by rush hour commuters, but outside those 'rush hour' times during the week it was rarely used at night, at weekends, and holidays. "Something had to be done!"declared Pick.
He began an advertising campaign to increase 'off-peak' usage.
This poster was the direct result of that campaign. The map is roughly centered on Hyde Park Corner, and extends west to Kensington, east to Southwark, north to Camden Town, and south to Clapham.
The poster visually highlights, via many stunning small humorous vignette illustrations, all the 'fun' and interesting things to do while exploring the capitol. The map has a number of coats-of-arms in the corners, and the central borders of the poster. These are: City of London / Holborn / Lambeth / City of Westminster / Chelsea / Kensington / St. Marylebone. In addition to the many vignettes, there are historical notes and commentary throughout.
Major roads and thoroughfares, bus routes, London underground stations, the River Thames, larger parks and gardens, tourist sights, and inner London suburbs are all depicted. Here is the wording that forms the border of the poster: The Heart Of Britain's Empire Here Is Spread Out For Your View. It Shows You Many Stations & Bus Routes Not A Few. You Have Not The Time To Admire It All? Why Not Take [The] Map Home To Put On Your Wall!. Why not indeed?

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
