Description
Decorative view of the back yard of the formerly the V.O.C. warehouse and arsenal for the Admiralty of Amsterdam, now-a-days the Scheepvaartmuseum (Maritime Museum).
The print is giving good detail of ship building activities and a clear view of the building, now-a-days the Maritime Museum.
Engraved by J. Mulder.
This work is based on the works by his predecessors Dapper and Van Domselaar and on materials furnished by the author's father Isaac Commelin (who gave a short description of Amsterdam in his work of 1665 about France, Spain etc.)
Commelin was a respected clergy-man in Amsterdam and had free access to the Amsterdam city archives, enabling him in completing this work and therefore it also contains much more reliable sources and official documents than the works by Dapper and Van Domselaar.
Commelin died in 1693, his work was first published posthumously in 1693-1694.
