The Asia map bears the imprint of Cornelis Danckerts (the elder), a highly skilled engraver. It is safe to assure that the others are by his hand also.
The map of Europe is dated 1627. Most probably sold separately at first, they did not appear in any atlas until Tavernier's Theatre Geographique du Royaume de France , first issued in 1632.
In 1640 the plates were changed and dated except for the America one. This is a first state: second state has Neuf Amsterdam and many more place names added. The map of America is based on the Jodocus Hondius of America, 1618, with one noticeable improvement, the completion of the south coast of Tierra del Fuego.
Petrus Bertius was related by marriage to both Jodocus Hondius Sr. and Pieter van den Keere. He studied at the University of Leiden and later travelled in Germany and Russia. In 1620 he emigrated to France where he subsequently found employment as cosmographer to Louis XIII.
Bertius published a number of folio maps, although never actually an atlas of his own. The maps were either separately issued or included in atlases and books by other publishers.
A rare set.
