Description
Rare lithograph by Daumier published in number 161 the journal "La Caricature" in 1833, plate # 337 / 338.
Proof on blanc paper, in original colors and heightened with gum arabic.
There are very few samples of this print recorded and can be considered extremely rare. The caption comes from one of Molière's plays.
The print shows from left to right: King Louis-Philippe, a coachman (the French people?), Ferdinand Duc d'Orléans, and Marshal Lobau with his famous syringe.
Louis-Philippe in 1833 bleeds a mail messenger (postillon) who has fallen off his horse, thereby saving his life. The King had learned the art of blood-letting in a hospital in his youth and always carried a bleeding knife on him. Symbolically it is not the postillon, but rather the French nation that is being bled.
- Louis LEROY was a medical doctor and author of various medical articles and books.
- Georges Mouton, Conte de LOBAU (1770-1838) participated in the Napoleonic Wars as a General. He was peered in 1809 and after a short period as a prisoner in England, he returned to France in 1818.
He was a politician and from 1828 to 1833 Deputy and served as General of the National Guard from 1830 on. In May 1831, he dispersed a Bonapartist manifestation on Place Vendôme by using water hoses from the firefighters. For this reason, he was nicknamed “Prince de tricanule” and “Seringot”.
Known chiefly as a political and social satirist, Honoré DAUMIER (1808-1879) used the printmaking process of lithography, still relatively new at the time, to contribute cartoons and caricatures to French newsweeklies.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
