Description
Fine hand-colored map of present day Zihuatanejo, Mexico. It comes from a Dutch edition of Anson's "VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD". The compass rose is striking.
George Anson, Lord Anson (1697–1762)
Anson is not a mapmaker in the usual sense. His place in the map trade rests on the book that bears his name and its set of engraved charts, plans and coastal views. The expedition itself was a sharp piece of naval warfare. It also fed a wave of Pacific cartography and a famous publishing success. He was a Royal Navy commander and the central figure of the 18th century’s most celebrated circumnavigation account, A Voyage Round the World (London, 1748) During the War of Jenkins’ Ear, Anson commanded a squadron sent to raid Spanish trading territories on the Pacific coast of South America. The voyage nearly ended in disaster, with heavy losses to scurvy, storms and shipwreck. Anson limped across the Pacific to Macao, where the Centurion was repaired and the crew replenished. He returned to England in June 1744 a rich man, after taking a Spanish treasure galleon in the Pacific. Only the Centurion completed the circumnavigation. The Voyage was published in London in 1748 by John and Paul Knapton. The title page credits it as compiled from Anson’s papers by Richard Walter, chaplain of the Centurion. It is now generally accepted that Walter drove the publication and gathered the subscribers, but Benjamin Robins completed the editorial work. The book appears to have been the most popular maritime adventure of the 18th century. Several editions were issued within the first year, and a Dublin edition followed in 1748.
The first edition is illustrated with 42 copperplates. These are charts, plans, coastal profiles and views, almost all of them folding. They include charts of the southern part of South America, of part of the Pacific Ocean, and of the track of the Centurion round the world. Later editions carry fewer plates, and the numbers vary by edition. For collectors, the large folding charts are the sought-after element, and they can be separated from the book and sold individually.

Condition and Coloring

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
