Description
A very rare map of the Great Lakes by Coronelli / Nolin and one of the most beautiful, acquirable works to focus on the region. As Tooley states, ?it was the best representation of the Great Lakes, particularly Lake Superior, that was printed up to that date.? The accuracy of the cartography is remarkable considering that at the time the region was only just becoming subject to French exploration. This no doubt reflects Coronelli?s favored position in the court of Louis XIV that gave him access to the freshest geographic information as it arrived in Paris. Sources for the map include Marquette, Joliet, and La Salle. These are acknowledged on the map and in the many notes that point out geographic features, settlements, forts and Indian villages. Another significant source was the work of Franquelin, who was based in Quebec and who served as a repository for geographic information from explorers and missionaries. He produced several large, manuscript maps that collated information from many of these diverse sources. The map is also significant for shifting the cartographic focus from the eastern seaboard to the American interior, which was very unusual for the period. Kaufman says ?The change [in focus] reflects a shift in French imperial policy which in this period was directed to the expansion of control of the fur trade and to contesting Spanish claims in the North American southwest.?

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
