Description
Every building and every street is carefully mapped out and identified, giving the viewer a rare glimpse of this thriving Spanish city.
A key beneath the panorama (1-10 & a-d) identifies the significant buildings, including the Royal Palace, and the Cathedral.
In the foreground there is plenty of activity with people in colorful clothing all heading into the city to sell or buy goods or services. In addition, people and animals stream around the outer walls. Workmen tend some raised beds of produce, behind the city the lake appears, set off by fantastical mountains and palm trees.
All these elements combine to evoke the exotic, the fantastic and the paradisiacal ambience that Europeans, starting with Columbus, associated with 'America'.
This engraved view appeared in John Ogilby's seminal work America: Being the Latest, and Most Accurate Description of the New World. published in London.
This in itself is an English translation of Arnold Montanus' Die Nieuwe en onbekende Weereld. . . which was published in Amsterdam in the same year (1671).
Christopher Columbus landed in Truxillo in the August of 1502, during his fourth and final voyage to The Americas. The history of the modern town begins in 1524, shortly after the conquest of Mexico by Hernan Cortes. Cortes wanted to find a Spanish outpost in the Central American region, and with this in mind, a man named Cristobel de Olid was sent to achieve this task.
In time, he established an inland settlement named Triunfo de la Cruz. Some time later the town was relocated to its present coastal location, due to a large natural harbor.
This town was named Truxillo, which went on to become a major port for Spanish shipments of gold and silver, mined in the interior.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
