Description
Map of New Zealand, published by "The London Printing and Publishing Company". Drawn and engraved by John Rapkin.
John Rapkin (1813-1899/1876) & John Tallis (1817–1876)
John Rapkin was a London engraver and publisher behind The Illustrated Atlas, and Modern History of the World (1851), the last great decorative atlas of English cartography. was an English mapmaker and engraver who worked closely with Tallis, and it is largely his style that makes the maps so admired today. His name and decorative vignettes appear on most Tallis maps. He also produced work for James Wyld (including a map of the United States with Oregon and Texas, c. 1845), drew and engraved the maps for R. Montgomery Martin’s The British Colonies (1849), and drew maps for a pronouncing dictionary. He married Frances Wilmot Rudell on 4 January 1837, and they had at least eight children, several of whom became engravers: John Benjamin, Alfred Thomas, Joseph Clarke and Frederick William. Rapkin traded as John Rapkin and Sons from 1867.John Tallis was an English publisher, born in the Midlands, who came to London in the 1840s. He began his London career with a remarkable series of London street views (1838). He set up as a publisher with Frederick Tallis in Cripplegate in 1842 (the business moved to Smithfield in 1846), and the partnership was dissolved in 1849. From 1851 to 1854 he operated as John Tallis and Company. In 1849 he travelled to New York and founded publishing agencies in six American cities. By 1853 the company had agencies in twenty-six cities in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada and employed over 500 people.
Tallis published an Illustrated Atlas of the World in 1849 and the fuller Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World in 1851, timed for the Great Exhibition (Hyde Park, 1 May to 11 October 1851). Rapkin drew and engraved a series of about eighty maps for it, on steel. The principal features are the extensive use of vignette views and highly ornamental engraved borders. The vignettes illustrate the peoples, customs and landmarks of each region.
Many regard Tallis maps as the last bastion of English decorative cartography in the 19th century. The text was edited by R. Montgomery Martin.
On 24 February 1854 he formed the London Printing and Publishing Company, becoming co-managing director with Ephraim Tipton Brain. In 1858 he began the Illustrated News of the World and National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Personages, sold in 1861 for £1,370. It ceased publication in 1863.
The London Printing and Publishing Company of London and New York bought the rights to many Tallis maps in 1850 and continued issuing the atlas until the mid-1850s. It left the Tallis imprint intact, which secured his lasting fame. Specific Tallis maps later appeared in many mid- to late-19th-century publications as illustrations and appendices.

Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
