1657 JANSSONIUS, J. - Early views of Mexico and Cusco.
Description
Two bird's-eye views on one sheet: Mexico and Cusco, with in the foreground of each are illustrations of Aztec and Inca figures.
The Mexico City view shows the city surrounded by the waters of Lake Texcoco, preserving an image derived from earlier sixteenth-century representations of the Aztec capital. Causeways lead toward the densely built urban center, while the foreground figures provide a European interpretation of Aztec dress and society.
Alongside is Cusco, presented as the great capital of the Inca Empire. Its streets and principal structures appear schematically, with Inca figures in the foreground reinforcing the composition's ethnographic character.
Janssonius's plate derives from the celebrated view first published by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg in the first volume of their Civitates Orbis Terrarum. The original plate appeared as early as 1572, making these representations among the best-known early printed European views of Mexico City and Cusco.
The pairing is particularly significant because it places side by side the two principal indigenous imperial capitals encountered by the Spanish in the Americas: Tenochtitlan/Mexico and Cusco.
This is Janssonius' rare re-edition of this own-plan after Braun & Hogenberg, with Latin text on verso. From "Theatrum Urbium Celebriorum totius Belgii sive Germaniae Inferioris."

Johannes Janssonius (1588-1664)
Jan Jansson (Janssonius ) was born in Arnhem where his father was a bookseller and publisher. In 1612 he married Elizabeth Hondius, daughter of the cartographer and publisher, Jodocus Hondius, and settled in Amsterdam. He became a book publisher and produced a large quantity of maps in rivalry with the great Dutch map publishing family of Blaeu. From about 1630 to 1638 he was in partnership with his brother in law, Henricus Hondius issuing further editions of the Mercator / Hondius atlases to which his name was added. On the death of Henricus he took over the business and along with many new publications he expanded the publishing of the atlas to an 11.volume Atlas Major.
The heirs of Jansson continued publishing until the end of the seventeenth century.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
