Description
Bottoms says is was published in the 28th year of Meiji Emperor which was 1897, in Tokyo. So this was published right after Japan took control of Taiwan. The index shows foot trails, even undersea cables. Not much development at the time. On the map only the railway services between Keelung and Hsinchu which began in 1891 under China’s Qing Dynasty has been completed. The railway was completely rebuilt and substantially expanded under Formosa’s Japanese colonial government (1895-1945).
During the period between 1895 and 1945 the island of Taiwan (including the Penghu Islands) was a dependency of the Empire of Japan, after Qing China lost the First Sino-Japanese War to Japan and ceded Taiwan Province in the Treaty of Shimonoseki.
The short-lived Republic of Formosa resistance movement ended to no avail when it was suppressed by the Japanese troops.
The fall of Tainan ended organized resistance to Japanese occupation, and inaugurated five decades of Japanese rule.
