Condition:		Strong impression. Cut into the outer top, left and bottom parts of the map, with missing areas carefully redrawn. The third image shows the border between the restored and existing areas in a light brown line The repairs are hardly notable. The map makes a great presentation.

Description

Map of Palestine from "La Mer des Hystoires" published by Dupré, Paris, 1536 "La Mer des Hystoires" is a translation into French of the famous "Rudimentum Novitiorum," a world history first issued at Lübeck in 1475.

This 1475 map of the Holy Land is regarded as the first modern printed map because it is not derived from a classical source (Ptolemy), nor is it in the circular schematic format characteristic of medieval maps.

However, it retains two attributes of earlier maps: it is "oriented" with the east at the top and Jerusalem at the center.

The geographic information is taken mainly from a now-lost manuscript map made two centuries earlier by a Dominican pilgrim, Burchard of Mt. Sion. In this bird's-eye view, topographic features are portrayed reasonably, and cities and regions are depicted as stylized hills.

"La Mer des Hystoires" is an original adaptation in the French language of a Latin text describing the universal history of France from its origins until the death of King Louis XI. It is completed with a geographical dictionary, a description of the Holy Land, Aesop’s Fables, and a genealogy of kings of France until the death of King Louis XI. It is followed by a second part entitled Le Martirologe des sainctz."

Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
