Description

Pieter van der Aa (1659 1733) was a prolific late seventeenth and early eighteenth-century publisher. His output was not just restricted to atlases: he also produced topographical and other illustrated works, including the spectacular twenty-eight volume Naaukeurige versameling der gedenkwaardigste See- en Land-Reysen. While other atlases are undoubtedly of more cartographical significance, Aa's Le Nouveau Theatre, is an imposing and highly attractive work. Complete copies are rare nowadays.

Curiously, the maps of the world, Asia, South East Asia and China show Korea in different types. A historical and geographical description accomplishes each continent and region.

Including a North Polar projection or azimuthal, an equidistant world map represents an important step in the history of mapping.

Karpinski considers it the first strictly scientific map of the world. However, despite the cartographic advances, California still appears as an island. Based on the famous 1696 Planisphere by Jacques Cassini, the map was developed from data collected at many observatories in such distant places as Malacca, Nanking and Guadeloupe.

As the information was collected and sent to Paris, it was transferred to a gigantic planisphere. Cassini was a highly trained and disciplined scientist, a skilled astronomer, and a geodesist.
This was the first map to set standard longitudes for known places based on scientific calculations.

This spectacular adaptation of the map by Van der Aa is perhaps the most elegantly engraved of the California as an island maps.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
