A very rare custom made collapsible peepshow in a bookshaped box, late 18th century, folded out 66(h.)x56(w.)x40(d.) cm., 7 hinging cardboard parts painted blue or w. black dots, w. one glass lense (Ø 11,5 cm.) and mirror, folding into a wooden box 'bound' as a book in full blindst. vellum w. brass clasps and catches, spine w. raised bands and gilt mor. letterpiece reading "Optische vermaakelykheeden", measuring 56(h.)x11,5(w.)x40(d.) cm.
br>Exceptional viewing box, also called "Rarekiek" in Dutch, for domestical use, w. presumably an original 18th cent. folio binding used as box.

Shown at the exhibition Een extra dimensie (Teylers Museum Haarlem, 1993) and illustrated/ mentioned in the associated catalogue: R. Albers, W. van Keulen and B. Ernst, Een extra dimensie. Van camera obscura tot stereofotografie (Haarlem, 1993, p.9).

- Vellum is sl. soiled; the wooden sides womrholed; a few connecting parts trifle worn; nevertheless fine.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
