Antonio Zatta (c.1775-1797)
Little is known of Zatta’s life beyond his many surviving publications. He may have been born as early as 1722 and lived as late as 1804, though most sources give his period of activity as 1757 to 1797, with his death on 2 April 1797. He lived and worked in Venice. He was working at the time when the English navigator, Captain James Cook was making new discoveries in the Pacific Ocean and around Australia and New Zealand. His most famous work is the Atlante Novissimo, published in Venice between 1775 and 1785. It is a four-volume atlas of the world, and incorporated the latest travel accounts and exploration. Zatta clearly drew on a large network of informants, which is how he was able to publish the first representation of the islands visited by Captain Cook in an Italian atlas.

Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
