Description
Early map of Gelderland, but also including Utrecht and parts of Brabant. Shows many cities (like Nijmegen, Eindhoven, Zutphen, Zwolle, etc), roads, rivers, woods, regions, etc. Oriented with West on top.
Decorated with a large title cartouche, a second cartouche with the date and mileage scales, and sailing ships in the Zuyder Zee. Engraved by Abraham Goos after Balthasar Floris van Berckenrode.
The counts of Gueldres started expanding their territory from the region around Wassenberg and Geldern. Though most of the territory they laid their hands on was situated in the central Dutch river area, they also ruled the course of the river Meuse in the center and the north of what is now Dutch Limburg.
RARE.
Henricus Hondius (1597-1651)
Henricus Hondius, the second son of Jodocus Hondius Sr., was an engraver, cartographer, and publisher in his own right. After coming of age, Henricus Hondius initially worked with his older brother, Jodocus, and brother-in-law, Johannes Janssonius, to carry on his father’s business. The two brothers continued to publish the famed Mercator-Hondius Atlas under the Elder Hondius’ name until 1619, after which point it bore Henricus Hondius’s name solely. After Jodocus’s unexpected death in 1629, Henricus was angered by the sale of his brother’s printing plates to Henricus’s main competitor, Willem Blaeu. In response, he commissioned the engravers, Salomon Rogiers and Evert Hamsersvelt, to copy the sold plates. Upon his mother's death in 1629, Henricus Hondius returned to the paternal home on the Kalverstraat and continued publishing with Johannes Janssonius. For reasons unclear, Hondius left the atlas publishing business in the early 1640s. Henricus Hondius died in 1651, leaving the copper plates and the continued publication of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas to Johannes Janssonius.
Henricus was the son of Jodocus Hondius, who was born in 1563 in Wakken (West Flanders). In 1593, Jodocus established his business in Amsterdam after spending several years in London. He was one of the most important engravers of his time and engraved maps for van den Keere, Waghenaer and Speed. Jodocus Hondius bought Mercator's plates in 1604, added about 40 maps, and published the expanded Mercator-Atlas in 1606, still under Mercator's name.
After he died in 1612 in Amsterdam, his sons Jodocus II and Henricus carried on the business.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
