A circular historical diagram that features a movable paper pointer, the dial is arranged in concentric circles, and the hand moves chronologically from the Holy Roman Emperors on the outside through to Popes and the Kings of Europe from A.D. to 1721 to the inside.
The chart displays a chronology of princes and dukes from the most important and influential Italian duchies and kingdoms from 1000 to 1800. Each century spans 45 degrees, the spheres of influence include the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily and the Duchy of Savoy. The names of noblemen appear in 14 concentric rings, one for each title, with 20 degrees for each century.
The titles appear at the appropriate positions on the paper pointer, so that you can turn the pointer to any date to see the names of the noblemen at that date. Cherubs hold a drape style title at the top, and there are extensive explanatory notes in German at the bottom.
A remarkable, and interesting cartographic curiosity.

Christoph Weigel the Elder (1654-1725)

Christoph Weigel was born on 9 November 1654 in Marktredwitz (Redwitz, in the Margraviate of Bayreuth) and died in Nuremberg on 5 February 1725. After training as a goldsmith, he learned copperplate engraving in Augsburg under Georg Andreas Wolfgang and Matthias Küsel. He then held various positions in Vienna, Augsburg and Frankfurt, and worked for a time in Regensburg. In 1698 he moved to Nuremberg, acquired citizenship and founded an art and book business with a branch in Vienna. He married the daughter of the prominent engraver and publisher Johann Christoph Lochner, which helped integrate him into the Nuremberg artistic community.
In Nuremberg, Weigel worked closely with the imperial geographer Johann Baptist Homann (1664–1724) on maps. His maps are noted for their detail and accuracy and include sheets such as Silesia (c. 1700), northern Greece and the Balkans, and a map of Transcaucasia from a historical atlas of c. 1720. He also worked with a younger brother, Johann Christoph Weigel, who ran an art shop in Nuremberg and was also very successful.
After Weigel’s death in 1725, his widow ran the firm, publishing a number of his works posthumously (for example his coat-of-arms book), until about 1734. The firm then passed to his son, Christoph Weigel the Younger (d. 1746), who partnered with Schneider as Schneider-Weigel. That firm continued to publish until the early 19th century.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
