Description
Basically the map shows the track of the great traveler Adam Olearius to Moscow.
From "Diverses cartes et tables pour la géographie ancienne, pour la chronologie et pour les itinéraires et voyages modernes".
Olearius, real name Ölschlegel (Aschersleben, 1599-1671, Gottorf, Holstein). After studying in Leipzig, Olearius became a schoolmaster. In 1633 he was appointed to participate in a commercial expedition to Russia and Persia, sponsored by the Duke of Holstein-Gottorf. After his return in 1639 he settled in Gottorp, becoming court mathematician and librarian. His account of the Persian journey, "Offt begehrte Beschreibung der Newen Orientalischen Rejse" (1647) is often regarded as the first scientific travel book in German. It was expanded as "Vermehrte Newe Beschreibung der Muscowitischen und Persischen Reyse" (1656). He published a volume of translations of Persian poetry, Persianischer Rosenthal (1654), in which he also broke new ground.
